Life is good when the sun is shining right? You can send the kids outside to play, go for a nice walk, head to the trails for a nice hike… if only life were this simple on rainy days, freezing cold days, or just times when we can’t spend much time outdoors (remember COVID-19?). Sometimes you have to put on a TV show or let your child have their tablet for an hour (or maybe more…), and that’s ok. Parenting is tough and we totally get it. However, we all know that the internet is scary and there are so many ways screen time can go wrong. We also know that once your 3 year old starts watching a show, a meltdown is all but guaranteed when you try to make them turn it off. Here are a few tips that can help you feel at little more at ease by making screen time a positive experience:
- Talk to your child’s teachers about what educational sources they use and recommend. This will at least give you a solid starting point before taking it upon yourself to search the world wide web. Online learning and screen time in general also highlights an equity issue, so if you or someone you know doesn’t have access to a computer or internet at home, consider seeing what options you have with your school board. Many school boards are doing what they can to make sure their students have access to both.
- Make a plan with your kids. If they are old enough, involve them in the discussion of what healthy screen time is, how long a reasonable amount of leisure time is, etc. Also make sure to schedule in some fun family time with or away from screens, whether it’s movie night, dinner all together with no distractions, a walk, game night, etc. Ask your kids about what activities they consider fun. For parents, it’s also really important to make sure that you stick to some rules around screen time as well—no phones at dinner, no emails after a certain time, etc. You’ll have to set a good example.
- Use screen time and social media to connect with others when possible. Voice or video chats on a regular basis with friends and families help us all learn how to stay connected with others and forge healthy relationships. This also helps engage others who might be more vulnerable or socially isolated (ie. elderly grandparents).
